Stepping Out

Dir. Charles F. Riesner

73 Minutes

USA

1931

Starring: Charlotte Greenwood, Reginald Denny, Leila Hyams, Lilian Bond, Cliff Edward

**1/2/*****

Leila Hyams and Charlotte Greenwood buddy comedy about two women who walk out on their movie producer husbands after catching them entertaining some young women under the guise of giving them film parts. Stagy, but not without its mild entertainment value, specifically as a result of Greenwood who is new to me this week (following a fun role alongside Buster Keaton in Parlour, Bedroom and Bath (the best of his early talkie pictures)), and she is really an interesting performer, both visually, with quick wit, and physically (her being a prop of Keaton delivered some inspired work for both of them in that other film). Some nice verbal sparring between Greenwood and Hyams also help make this a soft recommendation.
